Indore's municipal corporation cleared illegal constructions at Sirpur Ramsar site following NGT orders, aiming to protect its ecosystem and restore the Green Belt, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the city's environment.

Sirpur wetlands, like other Ramsar sites, are wetlands of ‘international importance’. But, these tags don’t change the conservation approach. There are other examples of negligence in the conservation of the Ramsar site(s) by the authorities.

Last March, the Bhadbhada slum was completely demolished by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation following an order from NGT. Even after 3 months, the people here are waiting for resettlement.

Ponds in Chhatarpur have become dumping sites and are impacted by evident encroachment, shrinking the lake from its original size.  | On Ground |

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had asked the district administration and BMC to identify encroachment on the Bhoj wetland near Bhadbhada bridge.
