Climate Kahani | In a historic development, the Government of India has taken a historic step to brighten the lives of tribal communities. The Ministry of Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved a Rs 5.15 billion solar power program for habitations and villages of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) under the Pradhan Mantri Tribal Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM Janjanam). The objective of this program is to electrify 1 lakh PVTG households in areas where power supply through the grid is not techno-economically viable.

This program will provide electricity to villages through off-grid solar power systems of 0.3 kW each. This means families in these remote areas will now be able to study at night, run businesses better and have easier access to health services. This initiative will not only make everyday life easier but will also promote local entrepreneurship. Artisans and small industries will now be able to follow the path of sustainable livelihood.

salient points:

  • Solar power systems will be provided to 100,000 PVTG families through PM Janjanam Karyakram.
  • This program will play an important role in achieving India's renewable energy goals.
  • Apart from social and economic development, this initiative will also benefit the environment.
  • This program has taken the mission of spreading the light of development in every corner of the country.

The social and cultural importance of this initiative is also no less. It provides access to modern facilities to tribal communities and gives them the opportunity to participate in the development of the nation. This is a major step towards bridging the gap between urban and rural India and ensuring inclusive growth for all.

MNRE will take funds for this program from its development action plan. It will be distributed over three years – Rs 200 million in 2023-24, Rs 2.55 billion in 2024-25 and Rs 2.4 billion in 2025-26. This dedicated budget line has been opened for PM Janman.
