Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced today that Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held within six to eight months after the end of the Delimitation Commission's exercise.

The declaration became important as the Delimitation Commission presented its preliminary report to five Associate Members who also presented objections/suggestions and now the report must be in the public domain for claims and objections from political parties, organizations and individuals. Judging by the process, the delimitation process could end in the next two or three months.

In an interview with Network18 TV Group that aired tonight, Shah said that the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will take place within six to eight months after the completion of the delimitation exercise that is about to end. . “There is no confusion,” he added.

The extended period of the Delimitation Commission ends on March 6 and there were reports that the Panel could obtain an extension of two to three months. If the Commission submits a report in June, following Shah's statement, Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir may be held in November-December this year or March-April next year.

It is worth mentioning here that the 2008 and 2014 Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were also held in the months of November to December.

Jammu and Kashmir have not had an elected government since June 19, 2018, i.e. for the last three and a half years when BJP withdrew its support for the PDP-BJP coalition government led by Mehbooba Mufti, leading to the imposition of a central government in the state that later bifurcated. in two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh and its special status was withdrawn on August 5, 2019.

Asked about Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's recent statement that India and Pakistan should solve their problems together, especially Kashmir, the Union Home Minister said there is no point in discussing as Kashmir is an integral part from India.
“This is the position adopted by all governments in Parliament. This is the position of the country,” Shah said.

He criticized Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi's statement recently made in Parliament that the Narendra Modi government's Kashmir policies have brought Pakistan and China closer together.

"The Narendra Modi government has given a proper response to every challenge posed by China," Shah said, adding that Rahul Gandhi does not know the history of the country and what happened in 1962 and by whom.
