Gangubai Kathiawadi controversy: SC suggests name change

Ground Report | New Delhi: The Supreme Court has suggested the makers of the film Gangubai Kathiawadi change the name of the film. This film is going to release on Friday. Babuji Raoji Shah, who called himself the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi, had filed a petition in this regard in the Supreme Court. Alia Bhatt has played the lead role in this Bhansali production film. The director of this film is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on Thursday.

A division bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice JK Maheshwari has asked Sanjay Leela Bhansali's lawyer Siddharth Dave to convey the Supreme Court's direction to the producers. Babuji Raoji Shah had earlier reached the Mumbai High Court, but his petition was rejected there. After which he knocked on the door of the Supreme Court. Apart from the name of this film, Babuji Raoji Shah has also raised objections to many other things and has demanded to stop the release of the film.

The Bombay High Court, in its order, held that according to the doctrine of tort, the act of defamation dies with the person. The court also held that Shah was prima facie unable to show that he was the son of the deceased Gangubai. (Gangubai Kathiawadi name change)

In a related development, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking a stay on the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi.

The film is inspired by the life of Gangubai, who ran a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai in the 1960s. The film is based on the book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai', written by S. Written by Hussein Zaidi and Jane Borges. Gangubai's real name was Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi. She was born in Kathiawar, Gujarat and grew up there.
