Ground Report | New Delhi: What just happened trending; After Rock made a joke about Jada, Will punched him in the face in what was NOT a bit: he then apologized and explained that he was being “a fierce defender of his family” as his “King Richard” character.
Things went off the rails in a dark way during the 94th Academy Awards when a Chris Rock prank directed at Jada Pinkett Smith didn’t sit well with her husband, Will Smith.
Not taking this lightly, Will Smith took to the stage and slammed Chris Rock in front of a gasping audience that many now think was staged and scripted.
As Will sat back down, he was heard saying, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f mouth.”
Later in the show, Smith won the Oscar for best actor, his first Academy Award win, and delivered an emotional speech.
“Richard Williams was a fierce advocate for his family,” Smith said, adding that “at this point in my life, I am overwhelmed by what God is asking me to do and be in this world.”
He called the win “a beautiful moment” and joked “art imitates life, I look like the crazy dad… Love will make you do crazy things.”
At the end of his speech, Smith said that he hoped the Academy would welcome him. The audience gave him a standing ovation.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, it didn’t take long for footage to begin leaking online from Australia and Japan, among others, where the sharing was not censored at all. Watching this video is extremely awkward and makes it clear that it was unscripted, unexpected, and Will’s anger was very, very real.
After Will punched Chris in the face and the audio cut to Americans, Chris told the stunned audience, “Will Smith just punched me.” It was clear that he was going to try to continue, but Will wasn’t finished.
