Why coca-cola facing boycott in European market

Ground Report | New Delhi: Coca-cola boycott in European market; Calls to boycott Coca-Cola have grown as the companies have not joined the ranks of other big global firms that have halted operations in Russia.

Three supermarket chains in Ukraine announced they would be removing Coca-Cola products from their shelves, while the hashtags #BoycottCocaCola, trended on Twitter over the weekend, with consumers promising to not buy their products while they continue to do business in Russia.

Dozens of major corporations, including Apple and Netflix, have ceased operations in the country since President Vladimir Putin launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine 10 days ago.

But while many companies have taken a stand, several food and beverage companies have remained silent and refused to cut ties with Russia. The biggest ones, including McDonald's, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, are coming under increasing pressure from political figures and social media users alike to withdraw their businesses from the country.

Ukrainian supermarket chain Novus announced Friday that it would stop selling Coca-Cola products (including Coca-Cola, Fanta, Schweppes and BonAqua mineral water), calling the company "shameless" for continuing to "work with the invaders with all her strength".

"Our supermarket chain no longer works with the Coca-Cola company, which continues to operate in the aggressor's territory," the company said in a Facebook post. “We are abandoning all products belonging to the brand.”

The Fozzy Group supermarket chain also reported that it was removing all products from its shelves and stopping all future deliveries.

"From today, we will remove all products from the shelves of Silpo, Fora, FOZZY Cash&Carry, Market super Thrash (Thrash) stores, and stop all future deliveries," the company said, according to Interfax-Ukraine. Varus also joined the boycott, citing the "official position of the Coca-Cola company to continue its activities in the market of the aggressor country."
