If it wasn't for Rabia Chaudry, you probably never would have heard the name, Adnan Syed. Pakistani-American attorney Rabia Chaudry made headlines on Monday, September 19, 2022, after more than two decades, Adnan Syed will finally walk free from prison.

It was Chaudry, a friend of Syed's family, who came to the attention of former Baltimore Sun reporter and This American Life contributor Sarah Koenig in 2014. She is also the author of a 2016 book about the case, titled Adnan's Story: The search for truth and justice after the series.

Who is Rabia Chaudry?

Chaudry, now 44, is an immigration attorney by trade and is a Pakistani-American mother of three. She met Adnan in 1995, four years before Hae Min's murder, when he started dating his younger brother Saad.

Rabia was in college at the time, and she tells Serial's Koenig that she knew Syed was "like the golden boy of the community." Both were part of the Muslim community in Baltimore and attended the same mosque, where Adnan often led prayers.

When Syed was arrested and charged with the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999, Chaudry was 24 years old and studying for her law degree. She was immediately convinced of her innocence.

Chaudry began visiting Syed in prison, she sat in the courtroom when he was convicted and has defended him ever since. In 2014, she approached Koenig 'out of desperation' and begged him to look into the case.
