A group of researchers from the IGE (Institute of Environmental Geosciences) and Dartmouth College have reviewed the first atlas that measured the movement and thickness of these ice giants to update the parameters of more than 250,000 mountain glaciers.

It is not new that glaciers around the world are losing mass, but until now little was known about what is happening to ice above 5,000 meters. 

 A study by the University of Leeds in England found that the Himalayan ice caps have lost ten times more ice in recent decades than the average since the last great glacial expansion 400 to 700 years ago, a period is known as the Little Ice Age.

Himalayan glaciers are unusually melting 10 times faster than before, so the water crisis in many Asian countries, including India.

At least a third of Himalayan glaciers will disappear by the end of the century, even if countries completely reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to a new report from the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development.

The Pensilungpa Glacier (PG) located in Zanskar, Ladakh is retreating and a recent study has attributed the retreat to a rise in temperature and a decrease in rainfall during winters.
