Sept may see normal rains, warmer days across India: IMD

The southwest monsoon has faced significant challenges establishing itself in the southern part of the peninsula this season. Normally, the monsoon moves from south to north, covering the entire point in about 10 days. By June 15, it normally reaches the southern coast of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal.

However, this year, the monsoon has experienced delays. It arrived in Mumbai on June 11, after the revised date of June 10. Since it reached Ratnagiri on June 11, the western arm of the monsoon has remained stagnant. The eastern arm has also shown little progress over the past week.

The arrival of the monsoon over Kerala was delayed by a week and its subsequent advance has been weak and slow. Most of the southern states are experiencing rainfall deficiencies of 70-80% while Maharashtra is facing a huge deficit of 80-90%. The Konkan region, including Mumbai, has received very little monsoon rain so far, with the city recording just 17.1mm of rain out of an average of 526.3mm in June.

This year, the late arrival of the monsoon in Kerala was followed by the disturbance caused by Cyclone Biparjoy. This situation is similar to the one in 2019 when the monsoon was delayed until June 25 due to the impact of cyclone 'VAYU'. However, Cyclone Biparjoy weakened over the sea without making significant landfall in Gujarat. In 2014, the cyclone 'NAUNAK' over the Arabian Sea also disrupted the start of the monsoon.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary exits, especially in low-lying areas, and to remain vigilant for possible landslides and mudslides.
