The Western official believes this is because commanders have to "come closer to the front" as Russia feels no progress has yet been made in Ukraine.

"The reason that is happening is that commanders feel they have to go further to have more momentum and control over operations," the official said.

On Monday, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Service said its military had killed Russian Army Major General Vitaly Gerasimov and a number of other senior officers.

"That's an indication of maybe some degree of frustration, some degree of lack of progress and they're trying to impose their personality on the battlefield and then put themselves at personal risk."

Guards Colonel Konstantin Zizevsky, commander of the 247th Guards Airborne Assault Regiment, was killed while protecting the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics during a naval operation.

Zizevsky was the commander of the 247th Guards Airborne Assault Regiment, according to the city's mayor, who lives in the Stavropol Territory.
