Madhya Pradesh is witnessing widespread rain and storms days before Nautapa begins. On Tuesday, showers and strong winds hit 17 districts including Betul, Seoni, Chhindwara, and Anuppur. The weather department has issued a heat wave alert for parts of Gwalior-Chambal and storm warnings for 40 districts including Bhopal and Indore.
Nautapa will start on May 25 and last till June 2. This period is known for extreme heat, but this year, the state has already seen 20 consecutive days of rain. More storms and rain are expected till May 24.
On Wednesday, heat wave conditions will affect Gwalior, Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Nimari, Tikamgarh, and Chhattarpur. Storms with wind speeds of 50–60 km/h are likely in Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, and Jhabua.
The weather office has also warned of heavy rain in several cities, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Rewa, Sidhi, Singrauli, Mandla, and Chhindwara.
Meteorologist Arun Sharma said that three cyclonic circulations and one turf system are active over the state, causing the current weather pattern. These systems will keep the storm and rain conditions in place for the next few days. Gwalior-Chambal will continue to feel the heat.
On Tuesday, Khajuraho recorded the highest temperature at 45.5°C, followed by Naugaon at 45°C. Gwalior touched 44.5°C despite light rain. Other hot spots included Tikamgarh at 44.8°C and Satna at 43.5°C.
In Rewa, a farmer and two buffaloes died after coming into contact with a live power line that snapped during strong winds. The incident highlights the risks tied to the ongoing storm activity.
The weather has been unstable since April. The first half of May brought daily rain, unusual for this time of year. Cities like Khajuraho, Gwalior, Morena, and Neemuch have started experiencing high temperatures again. Meteorologists expect the heat to rise further once the storm phase ends.
By late May, temperatures in many districts could cross 45°C. Cities such as Chhatarpur, Narsinghpur, Niwari, Bhind, and Vidisha are likely to be the worst hit. Khajuraho and Naugaon may touch 48°C. Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Ujjain may also face temperatures between 44°C and 45°C.
April also saw wild swings in weather. The first three weeks brought heat waves, rain, and hailstorms. Western disturbances and active cyclonic systems kept the weather unstable since late April.
With Nautapa approaching and temperatures rising, the next few days will be crucial for the state’s weather conditions.
