Storm & rain alert in MP: Weather to stay unstable in Bhopal, Indore, till May 13

The weather department has issued a storm and rain alert for several districts in Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain. Light rain, thunder, and lightning are likely in over 40 districts today. The current weather pattern is expected to last till May 13.

On Friday evening, heavy rain hit Alirajpur for around 30 minutes. Other districts also saw rain, storms, and lightning. These include Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Bhind, Datia, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Jhabua, Barwani, Dhar, Agar-Malwa, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Dewas, Khandwa, and Khargone.

Light rain and thunderstorms are also likely in Burhanpur, Harda, Sehore, Vidisha, Ashoknagar, Sagar, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Pandhurna, Chhindwara, Narsinghpur, Damoh, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, and Katni.

The weather already changed on Friday in many parts of the state. Cities like Sheopur, Anuppur, Shivpuri, Morena, Guna, and Singrauli reported rain and thunderstorms. Bhopal, Sehore, Raisen, and other districts also saw similar weather.

Temperatures across Madhya Pradesh stayed below 40 degrees Celsius. Bhopal recorded 34.2°C, Indore 34°C, Ujjain 34°C, Jabalpur 37.5°C, and Gwalior 37.6°C. Pachmarhi was the coolest at 30.6°C. Khajuraho was the hottest at 39.6°C. Mandla, Satna, Sidhi, and Rewa also crossed 39°C.

Meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran said that two active weather systems are behind the change. Light rain and thunderstorms may continue across the state until May 13.

The weather department said May usually sees high temperatures in Madhya Pradesh. In the past 10 years, the mercury has touched 47–48°C in some cities. This year, the month started with rain in many districts, which is unusual.

In the coming days, the temperature could touch 45°C or more in many places. These include Gwalior, Chhatarpur, Narsinghpur, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Bhind, Datia, Khargone, Barwani, Khandwa, Morena, Rajgarh, Raisen, Shajapur, Sheopur, Shivpuri, and Vidisha. Khajuraho and Naugaon may reach 48°C.

In major cities, Bhopal could see temperatures between 44–45°C. Indore, Jabalpur, and Ujjain may record similar levels. Gwalior is likely to be the hottest, with temperatures reaching 46–47°C.

April saw a mix of heat and rain. In the first week, temperatures ranged from 39–44°C due to western hot winds. A heatwave affected Ratlam. Other districts like Bhopal and Gwalior saw temperatures between 41–42°C.

In the second week, storms, rain, and hail hit 80% of the state. Some areas still faced high heat. In the third week, minimum temperatures stayed around 25–27°C, while maximum temperatures reached 40–44°C. Heatwaves continued in several districts.

From April 25, hail and rain returned due to Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Circulation. The weather has stayed unstable since then. The department expects this pattern to hold until mid-May.
