Jain PU College lecturer resigns after being asked to remove Hijab

Ground Report | New Delhi: Jain PU College; A private college teacher in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka has quit after being asked to remove her hijab by college management. She also released a video statement explaining her resignation. Chandani Naaz is the guest speaker on resignation.

Chandani was a visiting lecturer at a private college in the city including Jain PU College and Vidya Vahini College. For the past three years, I have taught students to wear the hijab. The principal who called me on Thursday told me not to wear any religious attire. I had no problems during those three years. Now my self-esteem has been compromised and my guest speaker has quit.

Chandni attended college wearing a daily hijab. She also lectured in class wearing the hijab. For the past three years, I have been pursuing a career at Jain College. From there, nothing was too much trouble. But yesterday the Principal called and said that there was an order not to teach any religious symbol, including a hijab, in cloth.

But I have been wearing hijab for three years. My self-esteem was threatened by this development. "I have resigned from my job yesterday due to all these developments," Chandni Naz said.

“Resigning from my position of lecturer of English subject as you demanded (from) me to remove my Hijab which I have been carrying from 3 years in your college,” read the resignation letter addressed to the college principal, dated 16 February.

“Right to religion is a constitutional right which nobody could deny… I condemn your undemocratic act,” Chandini wrote.

Meanwhile, colleges and schools elsewhere in the state of Karnataka are requiring students to remove the hijab as a pre-requisite to enter their premises. If a girl or a woman refused to obey the dictate, she would be turned away.

Many students, and even teachers, have had to go through the harrowing experience of being forced to remove their hijab when entering educational institutions. While many reluctantly endured this public humiliation to get in, others who resisted and refused to give in under the pressure were denied deportation.
