Ind vs Pak: What is the controversial MakeMyTrip ad, know the full story

An online travel company, MakeMyTrip ad earned more criticism than praise for the India-Pakistan match being played in Ahmedabad. This advertisement came into the limelight in less time. The online travel portal took out a full-page newspaper ad in Ahmedabad Times offering special discount codes that are applicable to Pakistani fans in India but in a unique way.  The company says in an advertisement that they will give discounts to Pakistani fans in accordance with the amount of runs or wickets they lose against India.

The ad begins with the words

“An Open Invitation To Pakistani Fans”. “Dear neighbours, let’s take a moment and forget our rivalries. After all, it’s not every day that you visit us. Hope you won’t mind us playing a good host. It’s going to be a big day today So, staying true to the Indian tradition of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ we want to extend some. heartfelt offers to you.”

The ad continued mentioning its offer to fans that if Pakistan loses by 10 wickets or 200 runs, get 50% off by using the code "BoysPlayedWell". If Pakistan loses by 6 wickets or 100 runs, you can get 30% off by using the code "EkShaheenHaar" and Men in Green fans can get 10% off by using the code "NoMaukaMauka" If Pak loses to India by 3 wickets or 50 runs.

Twitter reactions

Several users took to the microblogging platform X (Former Twitter) to share images of the ad stating it’s horrible. A fan wrote,

"As an Indian, I want to apologise to every Pakistani person for this @makemytrip. This does not represent Indian values. It only represents the worst among us.

Another user wrote on X,

"This is in such bad taste @makemytrip. Not just bad taste, this is absolutely gross. Hardly funny and zero class even in humour. I am almost apologetic to Pakistani cricket fans after looking at this. While #MaukaMauka was class apart, this is bullshit. I don't really know what has happened to our creative directors and writers. Gutter level stuff."

Another user wrote, replying to Akash Chopra's tweet,

We are terrible people. First, we deny them visas and then this. This is not funny, it only reflects our insecurities and our crass sense of humour. The foundation of any sporting competition is in respecting the opponent and bringing people together. We have forgotten that.

Meanwhile, Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was among others who were amused by the ad. He tweeted,

Love and romance don’t bring the kind of joy that Pakistan’s defeat does… well played, MMT.”

Commentator, and former India batter Aakash Chopra was not left behind in pulling Pakistani fans' legs through this Advertisement. He wrote,

"Lol MMT…BoyzPlayzwell was super funny 😊😊. Did someone notice the TV."

It's noteworthy that India has been quite dominant against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup History. Till now, 7 times both teams played against each other in the marquee Tournament and Men in Blue has dominated by 7-0.
