Know the interesting story behind Rachin Ravindra's, New Zealand Batter, name

New Zealand started their World Cup 2023 campaign with a bang. They thrashed defending champions England with 9 wickets in hand on Oct 5th in the World Cup 2023's opening match. Here, Devon Conway (152*) and Rachin Ravindra (123*) turned out to be the hero of the match. 

Devon Conway is already an exceptional players in New Zealand. Someone who got the recognition is Rachin Ravindra. He left remarkable footprints with his performance and attracted the limelight. He scored his first World Cup century in his first match itself.

Born in Wellington to Indian parents

Kiwi's young sensation was Born in New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington to Indian parents Ravi Krishnamurthy. His father is the founder of the Hutt Hawks Club in New Zealand and Deepa Krishnamurthy. Ravindra's Father was a software system architect from Bengaluru who moved to New Zealand in the early 1990s.

The story behind his name

In a pre-tournament interview with the World Cup broadcaster Star Sports, New Zealand's Young Sensation Rachin Ravindra revealed the story behind his name. He said, the name is a combination of two Indian legend Cricketers, i.e. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

He said, "Back in the day when Mum and Dad were deciding on names, they liked Rahul and Sachin. So they took Ra from one and Chin from the other and named me Rachin."

Ravindra's journey in domestic cricket

New Zealand batting All-Rounder gets his first contract with Wellington in the 2018-19 season. In this same season, he made his List A debut against Pakistan. Representing Wellington in the 2019-20 domestic season, Rachin scored his maiden century in List A,  in the Ford Trophy as well hit his maiden first-class century in the 2019-20 Plunket Shield. Meanwhile, the youngster has been a part of the 2016 and 2018 under-19 New Zealand squad.

Made international debut in 2021

The left-arm spinner and left-handed batter Rachin Ravindra made his international debut during a T20I against Bangladesh in Mirpur on September 01, 2021. In the same year, he made his test debut against India during the first Test in Kanpur played from November 25-29. He was also a part of the New Zealand squad for the World Test Championship final 2021 but didn’t feature in the game. 

Meanwhile, Rachin made his ODI debut vs Sri Lanka at Eden Park on Mar 25, 2023. Till now, he has played 14 ODIS and scored 363 runs with an average of 40.33 including his highest of 123 against England in the World Cup 2023 as well as taken 13 wickets with an economy of 6.36.
