In Begumganj town, Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, 100 people of Jain community have switched off their smartphones and deposited them in the temple for digital detox. These people will be away from their phones for the whole 24 hours.
Actually, the 10 days long Paryushan festival of Jain community is going on. In this people try to live a very simple life. During the festival, people have to give up their favorite things and observe strict penance. People have a choice in what they want to sacrifice.
Paryushan is a Festival of renunciation and penance
In earlier times, people used to give up their favorite fruits and vegetables during this time and kept a fast for 10 days. But in the last few years it has been seen that people are giving up smartphones along with some vegetables and food after sunset.
Jainism believes in renunciation and penance. Most of the people doing digital detox in Begumganj are of young age. They have been inspired by the religious guru present there to give up smartphones and internet.
The main reason for this is the increasing addiction of youth to playing games, watching adult film on the Internet.
People of Jain society believe that if these youths stay away from internet during Paryushan festival, then they will be able to spend their time in creative works and their whole year will be better.
Smartphones have become an important part of people's lives. Without it people cannot live even a moment. According to a survey by the National Library of Medicine, excessive use of smartphones has a bad effect on health. India has the second largest number of smartphone users after China.
What is Digital Detox?
Digital detox means weaning ourselves from the toxic use of digital devices. For this, nowadays people monitor their screen time and try to spend one day a week away from digital devices and spend their time with family and reading books. Many people also plan vacations in which they try to distance themselves from digital devices.
However, in today's era everything is done through smartphones. In such a situation, it is not an easy task to distance from it. If told, it is austerity.
