India's Captain Rohit Sharma is currently delivering an outstanding performance in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. He has scored a century against Afghanistan, complemented by a half-century against Pakistan. Although, he had a disappointing start with a duck against Australia. His form has since significantly improved. Next, Team India will face Bangladesh in a match set for October 19 in Pune.
Rohit Sharma now holds the record for the most sixes in international cricket, surpassing Chris Gayle's previous record of 553. The current record stands at a stunning 562, marking a significant milestone in Sharma's career. This feat was accomplished following his score of 86 runs against Pakistan on October 14, in Ahmedabad. Moreover, Sharma, presently serving as India's captain, has crossed 300 sixes in One Day International (ODI) cricket, becoming the third batsman to achieve this distinction. Meanwhile, Pakistan's all-rounder Shahid Afridi holds the supremacy in 50-over cricket, leading the chart with 351 sixes, followed by West Indian legend, Chris Gayle, with 331 sixes.
All eyes on 'AB de Villiers' World Record
Now, Captain Rohit Sharma is on the brink of breaking another sixes record. The 36-year-old Indian Captain is currently at third place in the World Cup with 34 sixes, just behind SA's AB de Villiers (37) and West Indies' Gayle (49). Considering Rohit Sharma's current exceptional form, there's a significant chance that he will surpass de Villiers’ world record in the upcoming game against Bangladesh.
Discussing the performances of the top three six-hitters in the World Cup, Gayle impressively racked up 1186 runs over 35 games, averaging 36. De Villiers outperformed with a score of 1207 runs in a mere 22 innings, averaging an incredible 63.52. Rohit Sharma, too, showed remarkable performance with 20 innings under his belt at the World Cup event. He has managed to smash 1195 runs, averaging 66.38. As India is set to face Bangladesh at Pune's MCA Stadium on October 19th, Rohit Sharma will indisputably be the focus of attention.
But, will he break the record set by South Africa's AB De Villiers?
