CWC 2023: Rohit Sharma eyes on breaking 'AB de Villiers' World Record

Nearly a week has passed since the onset of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Already, we've witnessed impressive feats such as a player amassing over 150 runs by an individual player to South Africa’s exceptional achievement of hitting three player hundreds in a single innings. With less than 7 days into the tournament, it has already begun creating a trove of unforgettable moments. Hence, rendering the event special.

A look at the points table

Having triumphed in both of their matches, New Zealand currently leads the Points Table, boasting 4 points and a superior net run rate of +1.958. Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, occupies the second position, following a commanding victory over Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With 4 points, India's team has a net run rate of +1.500. Despite winning their two games, Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, finds itself in the third position due to a lower net run rate. And, South Africa now occupies the fourth spot.

Highest score, Most Runs and Wickets

To date, New Zealand's left-handed opener, Devon Conway, holds the record for the highest inning score, having made 152* against England in the opening match of the ODI World Cup 2023. This outstanding performance contributed significantly to the Kiwis' effortless 9-wicket victory.

On another note, the Pakistani wicket-keeper batsman Md Rizwan leads the list of top individual scorers, having amassed a total of 198 runs in two matches, one of which included an impressive 131* against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's all-rounder, Mitchell Santner, holds the position of top wicket-taker, boasting 7 wickets, including an exceptional fifer against the Netherlands.

Record breaks in a single match

The fourth World Cup 2023 fixture, held on October 7th between Sri Lanka and South Africa, established a spectacular new record. Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram each contributed dazzling centuries, propelling the Proteas to reach a lofty target of 429. During the pursuit, significant contributions from Kushal Mendis, Aslanka, and Captain Shanaka propelled Sri Lanka to a total of 326 runs. The remarkable combined score of 755 runs in this one match has set an unprecedented high in World Cup history.

Pakistan chased down the highest score in the World Cup

On October 10 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, during their game against Sri Lanka, Pakistan successfully reached the lofty target of 345 runs. With six wickets to spare, they did so admirably. Shafique, scoring 113 and Rizwan, with an unbeaten 131, were the heroes of the match.

Nevertheless, this is only the first week of the World Cup, and more records are anticipated to be toppled as the tournament progresses.
