2023: These Indian states are leading in renewable energy generation

India's power generation mix is rapidly shifting towards a more significant share of renewable energy. Today, renewable energy accounts for over 41 per cent of India's installed electricity capacity, making it the world's third-largest producer.

The recent Installed Capacity Report by the Central Electricity Authority sheds light on the Indian states that are leading the renewable energy transition in India.

The Southern region of the country is leading the pack with installed renewable capacity (as of 31st May 2023) of over 62.6 GW, followed by the Northern and Western regions with 53.9 GW and approximately 48 GW of installed renewable energy capacities, respectively.

The Eastern region reportedly lags behind with approximately 34.3 GW of installed renewable energy capacity. The North Eastern region (2.49 GW) and islands (38.4 MW) contribute to a total of 173.6 GW of installed renewable capacity across India.

Here, we will look at the leading states in India that are driving the nation's aim to meet 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewables. They are increasing the installed renewable energy (RE) capacity to 500 GW by 2030.
