Video: Defence College collapses amid heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun

Amid rainfall in Uttarakhand, the defense college building in Maldevta collapsed on Monday, marking a grim turn of events. The downpour triggered landslides along national highways leading to revered shrines like Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri.

A landslide triggered debris that blocked Badrinath National Highway in Pipalkoti area in Chamoli. News agency ANI reported that several vehicles were buried under the debris. Similarly, a landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri blocked traffic on Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway. Heavy vehicles have also been prohibited from moving on Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways at Sakhnidhar.

Tragedy struck closer to home when reports emerged of a person buried under rubble near Pipalkoti. In Chamoli district, the situation became dire along the banks of several rivers, including Alaknanda and its tributaries Pindar, Nandakini and Birhi. Pranmati, a tributary of Pindar, faced flooding due to a landslide. Further upstream, landslides in the upper Nandakini region contributed to a rise in downstream water levels.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has directed their district magistrates and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to remain alert in order to assist the people in case of any emergency, as incessant rains have triggered landslides that have blocked traffic on various roads, including national highways, resulting in the movement of people being affected.

The state has been reeling under incessant downpour that have left 60 people dead and 17 missing, news agency PTI reported.

A red alert is a warning for extremely bad weather conditions that are certainly going to disrupt travel and power and pose a significant risk to life.
