Strong winds and heavy rain continued across Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, affecting more than 15 districts. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a storm alert for 17 districts, including Gwalior, Morena, and Narmadapuram, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 60 km/hour. Rain is also likely in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and several other districts.
Since April 26, the state has experienced 39 straight days of stormy weather and rain. This trend is expected to last until June 7, as pre-monsoon systems remain active. Meteorologists say this unusual weather is the result of ongoing cyclonic circulation, western disturbances, and trough activity across central India.
On Tuesday, cities including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Mandla, Rewa, and Sagar received rain. Bhopal recorded 33.4°C during the day, Indore 31.3°C, and Gwalior 34.1°C. Pachmarhi remained the coolest spot at 28.4°C. In Khargone, 45 mm of rain fell, while Raisen recorded over 1 inch in just nine hours.
May saw an unusual shift in weather. Instead of heatwaves, 53 districts reported continuous rain and storms throughout the month. Indore broke a 139-year rainfall record, receiving 114.8 mm (4.6 inches), while Ujjain also set a new monthly record. Only Niwari district saw minimal rain that didn’t register officially.
Day temperatures in May remained below 43°C in most parts of the state. In contrast, cities like Naugaon and Khajuraho touched 40°C, but the intensity of heat was lower than in April, which saw peaks of 45°C in several areas.
Monsoon is currently stalled over Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. Its entry into Madhya Pradesh is expected between June 7 and 10. Forecasters expect a brief rise in temperatures before the monsoon arrives.
