India Energy Week 2024: Will green hydrogen become a game changer?

India Energy Week 2024, currently taking place in Goa, is showcasing an exciting vision for India’s energy future. The event is highlighting several key developments, with a special focus on clean energy, ambitious climate goals, and energy security. One of the main topics of discussion is the growing role of hydrogen in the energy sector.

Investment in India’s energy sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Energy Week, calling for more investment in India’s energy sector. His call reflects the need to meet the country’s growing energy demand and ensure affordable prices. A key part of this strategy is the “Panchamrit” approach to energy security. This strategy aims to diversify energy sources, with ambitious targets for renewable energy, biofuels, and hydrogen. The goal is to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lessen the impact of climate change.

Another important announcement was the target to blend 20% ethanol in petrol by 2025. This change not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular petrol, but also increases energy security by reducing dependence on imports. This policy change is expected to create new opportunities for farmers and contribute to rural development.

The big question now is how these developments will impact the Indian energy sector, and whether hydrogen can truly be the game-changer some believe it to be. As the discussions at India Energy Week 2024 continue, these questions remain at the forefront.

Bhushan Rastogi, Managing Director, Mercados Energy Markets, says, “The most striking thing about the events of Energy Week is that energy security is at the center of our country's policy making along with concerns related to climate change".

"Renewable energy is also a priority to tackle. In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the use of solar and wind energy in India's energy sector, which is contributing significantly to the overall power generation capacity", he added.

"Advances in technology, continued policy support, and rapid private sector investment have driven this change, making solar plants a better alternative to coal power for power producers today."

Startups: Innovation for a sustainable future

India Energy Week is highlighting the crucial role of startups in India’s energy sector. By integrating these startups into the energy value chain, India can speed up its shift to sustainable energy.

One of the main focuses of the event is green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is a clean, versatile fuel that can be used in many sectors like transport, power generation, and industry. It doesn’t release greenhouse gases when burned, making it a crucial tool in the fight against climate change.

The Indian government’s Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a world leader in producing and exporting green hydrogen. The mission, along with several partnerships and agreements announced at the event, is setting up a strong green hydrogen ecosystem in India. This could attract big investments, create jobs, and make India a key player in the global energy market.

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, reiterated India’s strategic focus on clean energy sources like hydrogen and a gas-based economy. Gas is a cleaner alternative to coal and helps keep the electricity grid stable and flexible. This balanced approach ensures energy security while setting the stage for a long-term shift to renewable energy.

Challenges and opportunities ahead

Saurabh Srivastava, Associate Director of Mercados Energy Markets, said, “By focusing on renewable energy, increased electrification and reducing carbon emissions, India aims to become a world leader in clean energy. The discussions at Energy Week are centered around India’s ambitious goals for a sustainable energy transition, which is a positive development.”

There are promising developments at India Energy Week, but there are also challenges. These include building a strong hydrogen infrastructure, lowering production costs, and ensuring good storage and transport. Despite these challenges, India determines to use hydrogen to create a cleaner future. The positive policy environment in India instills hope that it can overcome these challenges.

India Energy Week 2024 shows a changing picture for India’s energy sector. With a focus on renewable energy and clean energy options like hydrogen, India is ready for big changes in the energy sector. Despite the challenges, the future looks promising. Hydrogen could be a game changer for energy security. Only time will tell if India can fully use its potential and become a world leader in this new technology.
