Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union President Aishi Ghosh has been given ticket by the CPM from Jamuria seat in West Burdwan district.
According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, this is the first time that the CPM is giving tickets to many veteran leaders against the ruling TMC along with a number of young leaders.
26-year-old JNUSU President Aishi Ghosh came into the limelight after the violence in the university in January 2020.
Other youth leaders of the CPM also include state secretary of its student organization, SAFI, Sreejan Bhattacharya, and Meenakshi Mukherjee of the CPM’s youth wing DYFI who have been given tickets.
Among the CPI(M)’s other young leaders who will contest the polls are SFI state secretary Srijan Bhattacharjee who will contest from Hooghly district’s Singur seat where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces a tough challenge. Peeved on not being fielded, TMC’s sitting MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya, an octogenarian, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last week.
Minakshi Mukherjee, state president of the CPI(M)’s youth front, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), will contest against chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari at Nandigram which earlier used to be a Left stronghold.
