There has been a 72% increase in the number of people arrested under UAPA (Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act) in the year 2019 as compared to 2015. In the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Home Affairs has given these figures in response to a question.

In 2019, 1,948 people were arrested under the UAPA in 1,226 cases registered across the country.

In 2019, the highest number of UAPA cases were reported in Manipur (306), followed by Tamil Nadu (270), Jammu and Kashmir (255), Jharkhand (105) and Assam (87).

But Uttar Pradesh was at the forefront of arrests. There were 498 arrests here in the same year.

This was followed by 386 arrests in Manipur, 308 in Tamil Nadu, 227 in Jammu and Kashmir and 202 in Jharkhand.

Union Minister of State for Home Kishan Reddy said in a written reply, “The state police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigate cases under UAPA. As far as the NIA is concerned, so far 48 special courts have been set up across the country for quick investigation into terrorism related cases."

In 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, 897, 922, 901 and 1,182 cases were registered under this Act. While the number of arrests were 1,128, 999, 1,554 and 1,421.
