16 army personnel killed as truck skids down in Sikkim

At least 16 Army soldiers including three Junior Commissioned Officers were killed in an accident in Zema area of North Sikkim, as they were travelling skidded down a steep slope and fell into a gorge, Army said in a statement.

According to the official statement of the Indian Army, the vehicle was part of a three-vehicle convoy that had moved from Chatten in the morning towards Thangu., when the vehicle skidded down. En route to Zema, the vehicle skidded down a steep slope while taking a sharp turn.

“A rescue mission was immediately launched, and four injured soldiers have been air evacuated” army said in a statement. Four jawans have been airlifted for treatment.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a Tweet expresses pain , he tweeted "Deeply pained by the loss of lives of the Indian Army personnel due to a road accident in North Sikkim. The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who are injured," tweeted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

BJP National President JP Nadda tweeted "Anguished by the loss of lives of the Indian Army personnel in a road accident in North Sikkim. The whole nation is grateful for their commitment and sacrifice for the motherland. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I’m praying for the speedy recovery of the injured".

National Spokesperson of BJP Sambit Patra tweeted "Saddened by the loss of lives of Indian Army personnel in an unfortunate road accident in North Sikkim. Deepest condolences to their families. The nation will remain indebted to their selfless service. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who were injured in this accident".
