A terrorist was killed by security forces at an encounter at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Tuesday.

The militant was identified as Aqib Mushtaq Bhat, who initially worked for the banned terror group Hizbul Mujahideen, and had been working with the local branch of Lashkhar-e-Taiba, The Resistance Front (TRF).

Additional Director General of Police Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar said the terrorist who killed Kashmiri Pandit Sanjay Sharma, has been killed in the Awantipora encounter.

Who was terrorist Aqib Mushtaq Bhat?

Aqib Mushtaq Bhat of Pulwama.was a category A militant who initially worked with Hizbul Mujahideen but now worked with TRF.

"Killed terrorist identified as Aqib Mushtaq Bhat of Pulwama (A category). He initially worked for HM terror outfit, nowadays he had been working with TRF. Killer of late Sanjay Sharma neutralised," the Jammu and Kashmir Police tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Kashmiri area police said: "The encounter started at Padgampora Awantipora in Pulwama district. Police and security forces are working. More details will be forthcoming."

Kashmiri pandit was killed on Sunday

Sanjay Sharma, a resident of Achan in Pulwama, was shot at by terrorists as he was on his way to a local market on Sunday. The 45-year-old man, who worked as a bank security guard, succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

PPD chief Mehbooba Mufti, who visited his residence, demanded compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to be paid to the three sons of the late Kashmiri Pandit. She said that everyone is ashamed of the murder of Sanjay Sharma, while at the same time she took aim at the government for its crackdown on Muslims in the name of eroding militancy.

She also said that Sanjay Sharma's sons should receive compensation of Rs 5 lakhs each and a job for a family member in Jammu. "Sanjay's sister's children should also receive security," she added.
