Who is Christopher Darnell Jones suspect of University of Virginia shooting?

The University of Virginia reported a shooting on campus and urged the community to shelter in place Sunday night. Campus police said in a tweet that they were looking for Christopher Darnell Jones in connection with the shooting.

In a series of tweets, institution officials, including president Jim Ryan, indicated that shots were fired on Culbreth Road in Charlottesville, Virginia. A suspect was on the run and was considered to be armed and dangerous. Those in the affected area should inform their loved ones of their condition. 

What happened so far

Perry's grieving father, Sean Perry, confirmed his son's death to local newspaper The Daily Progress on Monday morning, saying he and the victim's mother, Happy, were flying from their hometown of Miami to Virginia.

Three victims died, while two others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment, and their conditions are unclear at this time.

Sophomore Em Gunter told the Times-Dispatch that she was watching a lecture in her dorm when she heard six gunshots around 10:15 p.m.

The 19-year-old lives at the International Residential College, located across from Culbreth Road, where the shooting occurred.

He quickly sent a message to the other 350 students in his dorm building warning them to stay inside and snuggle up with his friends in his room.

Police said they were looking for Christopher Darnell Jones "in connection with the shooting that occurred on University of Virginia property. Call 911 if you see him, stay away." 

University president says suspect is student

In a statement early Monday, school president Jim Ryan said Jones is still "at large" following Sunday night's deadly shooting, according to The Associated Press.

"One of our students, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is suspected of committing the shooting," the statement shared on Ryan's Facebook page read. “The suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Multiple law enforcement agencies are coordinating to find and apprehend him."

Ryan went on to say that university officials are "working closely with the families of the victims" and will share more details "as soon as we can."

"This is a message any leader hopes they never have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia," the statement continued. “This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community and we have cancelled classes for today (Monday, November 14). At this point, only designated essential employees need to report to work on Monday (all remote employees must continue to work remotely). If you are unsure of your status, please contact your supervisor.”

Who is Christopher Darnell Jones

He was born on November 17, 1999, and is 23 years old. She is believed to weigh 190 pounds. He is a brown-eyed African American. He was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket or hoodie, blue jeans, and red shoes.

In 2018, the suspect was a University of Virginia football team member. He is from Petersburg, Virginia, and spent three years at Varina High School before transferring to Petersburg High School for his senior year.

Jones' football biography says he did not appear in any University of Virginia games, although he was on the 2018 roster. However, the biography says that he was a high-achieving high school student, both on and off the field. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 195 pounds during his freshman year.

The bio reads:

Played linebacker and running back at Petersburg High School for head coach Michael Scott … earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior … spent first three years of high school at Varina High School where he earned honorable mention all-conference as a freshman and second-team accolades as a sophomore and junior … member of the National Honor Society … National Technical Honor Society … president of Key Club … president of Jobs for Virginia Grads Program … named Student of the Year as a freshman and sophomore at Varina … son of Margo Ellis and Christopher Jones, Sr. … has three siblings, Eliza, Darrius and Varian.

He spent his first three years at Varina High School as a freshman and received second-team accolades as a sophomore and junior. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society.

Virginia governor issues statement

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin took to social media Monday morning to say he and his wife, Suzanne, are “praying for the U.Va. community.” “Virginia State Police is fully coordinating with UVA police department and local authorities,” his statement continued.

“Please shelter in place while the authorities work to locate the suspect. For family and friends with questions about the event, University of Virginia has established an Emergency Hotline at 877-685-4836.”
