The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially announced that the next population census in India will take place in 2027. For Madhya Pradesh and most other states, the reference date has been set as 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027. This means the data collected will reflect the population and conditions as they were on that date. This will be India’s first census in 16 years, as the 2021 census was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the gazette notification, the census will be carried out in two phases. For most of India, including Madhya Pradesh, the reference date has been set as 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027. This means all data collected will reflect the situation as of that date.
The notification also specifies an earlier reference date for certain snow-bound and non-synchronous areas. In places like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026, due to logistical and weather-related challenges.
For Madhya Pradesh, this announcement marks the start of preparations for a massive administrative task. The census will provide updated data on population growth, urban and rural demographics, and resource distribution. It will help the government plan for public services such as health, education, and transport, and determine the allocation of development funds.
What Is a Census?
A census is a complete count of every person living in a country. It collects detailed information about individuals, including age, gender, education, employment, and housing. In India, the census is conducted every ten years and aims to gather accurate data on the size and distribution of the population across different regions.
Unlike surveys that rely on samples, the census includes everyone. This makes it the most reliable source of demographic information. The data collected is used by the government to plan public services such as schools, hospitals, and roads. It also helps in allocating funds to states and districts, setting electoral boundaries, and monitoring social and economic progress.
Census Phases
The 2027 Census will be conducted under the Census Act of 1948, Census Rules, 1990 and will likely include digital tools to improve data accuracy and speed up the process. Officials are expected to release more details on the phases and digital rollout in the coming months. The last national census was held in 2011.
A day before issuing the official notification, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the upcoming Census in a meeting held in North Delhi. He met with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other senior officials to assess the planning.
The Census will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, known as the House Listing Operation (HLO), officials will gather data on housing conditions, household facilities, and assets. In the second phase, called Population Enumeration (PE), they will collect information about every individual in each household. This will include demographic, economic, social, and cultural details. The Census will also include caste-related data.
