“Alone Muslim girl on the way to her college in Karnataka, India is being heckled and harassed by a Hindu right-wing mob for wearing a hijab!” Professor Ashok Swain of Uppsala University said on Twitter.
Recently, this matter came into the limelight when about half a dozen girl students of a pre-university government college in Udupi refused to remove the hijab.
These second-year girls turned down the appeal to take off the hijab and sit in the class. When these girl students were not listened to, they started protesting. The matter escalated when some students wearing saffron shawls came to the college in Udupi district in response to the girls wearing hijab.
After this, the girl students also tried to enter a private college by wearing saffron shawls as a procession. The matter kept on gaining momentum and political parties also jumped into this controversy.
The girl students have filed a petition in the High Court to stop wearing the hijab. They say that wearing hijab is their constitutional right. So they cannot be stopped from this.
