India plans phased release of African cheetahs in Kuno National Park starting late October. Despite challenges, including losses, the project has seen some breeding success.
After 70 years, India will see cheetahs on their soil. The Government of India has signed an MoU to bring 8 cheetahs from Namibia and 12 from South Africa. Under this, 8 cheetahs will be brought to India in two batches.
Due to the long delay in signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the South African Government and the Indian Government, now South Africa may exchange some 12 Cheetahs.
