Sustainable celebrations: How to have an eco-friendly Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, an important religious festival, brings joy and happiness to Muslims all over the world. However, like other celebrations, it also has an environmental impact that should not be overlooked. The extravagant nature of the festivities, with additional food, drink, and clothing being prepared and consumed, leaves a considerable environmental footprint. Unfortunately, the celebrations often result in various forms of pollution and waste.

Eid al-Adha: Environmental impact

Eid al-Adha, like many joyous festivities, can take a significant toll on our environmental resources. The preparation of extravagant meals, the overconsumption of food and drink, and the production of disposable plastic waste collectively contribute to an alarming environmental footprint. Recognizing the urgency of addressing these challenges becomes paramount to ensure a harmonious celebration that respects our planet.

A worrying issue during Eid al-Adha revolves around the rampant use of plastic, adding to the global plastic pollution crisis. Unfortunately, these items often end up in landfills and bodies of water, posing a serious threat to wildlife and ecosystems. To mitigate this problem, a collective effort is needed to reduce plastic consumption and promote sustainable alternatives.

Another crucial aspect that draws attention is the waste of water during the ritual sacrifice of animals. Traditional practices involve cleaning and washing the slaughtered animal, leading to excessive use of water. Considering the critical importance of water conservation amid the global water crisis, it becomes paramount to find alternative approaches that meet religious obligations and minimize waste.

Lack of Proper waste disposal

Another important aspect of Eid al-Adha is the ritual sacrifice of animals, which symbolizes the will of the Prophet Ibrahim to obey God's command. However, the consequences of these sacrifices often leave traces of blood, skin, fat, intestines and limbs in communal places and in homes. Unfortunately, these places are not always properly cleaned.

During Eid al-Adha, families prepare special meals and meat dishes to share with loved ones, neighbours, and well-wishers. However, this generous tradition often results in a worrying amount of food waste. The amount of food prepared tends to exceed the actual number of visitors, leading to leftovers and excesses. This pattern persists throughout the vacation period, from breakfast to fancy dinners, contributing to a significant amount of wasted food.

It is essential to acknowledge the efforts made by the government in planning and procuring various items such as meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products to meet the increased demand during Eid al-Adha. Consumption of meat and poultry, in particular, rises to nearly 50% above normal demand. However, as the years have passed, the festivities have become more extravagant, leading to increased consumption and waste.

While rising incomes, rising living standards and affordability have understandably contributed to this trend, avoiding excessive waste is critical. When planning Eid al-Adha celebrations, it is imperative to take the environment into account and make thoughtful decisions.

Promoting eco-conscious celebrations

  • Reducing Plastic Consumption: Embrace reusable bags, containers, and cutlery instead of relying on single-use plastic items. Encourage others to adopt these practices and raise awareness about the detrimental environmental impact of plastic pollution.
  • Embrace sustainable packaging: Opt for eco-friendly packaging alternatives, such as biodegradable or compostable materials. Promote the use of recyclable options to minimize waste generation and contribute to a circular economy.
  • Water conservation: Adopt water-saving practices during animal sacrifice rituals, such as using minimal water for cleaning and ensuring proper drainage systems. Educate community members on the importance of water conservation and its alignment with Islamic teachings.
  • Donate excess food: Instead of allowing leftover food to go to waste, donate it to charity or distribute it to those in need. Encourage responsible portion sizes and discourage wasteful practices, thereby promoting a more sustainable food culture.
  • Emphasize education and awareness: Use educational campaigns, community initiatives, and sermons at mosques to raise awareness of the environmental impact of Eid al-Adha celebrations. Highlight the importance of environmental stewardship in Islamic teachings and foster a collective sense of responsibility.

Eco-friendly Eid al-Adha celebration tips

  • Limit clothing purchases and choose items with minimal packaging.
  • Prepare meals based on actual requirements and number of guests to avoid excessive leftovers.
  • Serve food in smaller portions to minimize waste.
  • Educate guests on the importance of avoiding food waste.
