Ground Report | New Delhi: Sunanda Pushkar death case; A Delhi court has acquitted Congress leader Shashi Tharoor of all charges in connection with the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Sunanda Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Delhi hotel on the night of 17 January 2014. The couple was staying at the hotel at that time as renovation work was going on at their house.

The court dismissed Tharoor's case of abetment to suicide on the basis of lack of evidence. Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel in Delhi on January 17, 2014. Initially, his death was believed to be suicide but later Delhi Police said that he was murdered. 

In 2018, Delhi Police accused Shashi Tharoor of abetting his wife's suicide and cruelty. Delhi's Patiala House Court, he considered the accused in this case.

However, then Shashi Tharoor tweeted that the allegations made in the chargesheet were baseless and talked about fighting against it. Shashi Tharoor has thanked Justice Gitanjali Goel by issuing a statement after the court's order to acquit him.

Tharoor wrote, "This order has put an end to the terrifying dream that surrounded me after the tragic death of my wife Sunanda. I patiently faced the dozens of allegations leveled against me and the falsifications in the media and the Indian judiciary. I kept faith in me, which has won today."

A day before Sunanda's death, there was a tussle between Sunanda and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar on Twitter. Then there was speculation of an affair between Meher and Tharoor. Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda were married in the year 2010.

In February, the Supreme Court had asked the Delhi Police to file a reply on a petition by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. Swamy had filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding the investigation of Pushkar's death by the SIT under the supervision of the court.
