Explained: Reasons of Sikkim Floods

The bursting of South Lhonak Glacial Lake in India's north-eastern state Sikkim has caused floods in the four districts Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong and Namchi. This flood was so terrible that some major highways and bridges of the state along with a big dam also got affected by it. It is being told that the Chungthang Dam built on the Teesta River was part of the 1200 MW Mega Teesta Stage III Hydro Electric Project. This 60-meter-high dam was built on the Teesta River. Due to the bursting of the lake, its water reached the dam via the Teesta River. The flow of water was so strong that it washed away the dam along with it. Due to the breaking of the dam, 5.08 million cusec of water also flowed downstream, making the flood even worse.

According to the visuals coming on social media and according to the local people, muddy water is flowing in the rivers, due to which the severity of this flood can be estimated. In view of the danger, high alert has also been issued in Gangtok and Pakyong districts. Also, people have been advised not to go to the banks of rivers.

23 army soldiers have gone missing due to this flood. Apart from this, 20 civilians are also reported missing. According to the army statement, “Due to the release of water from Chungtham Dam, the water level suddenly increased by 15 to 20 feet. Army vehicles have been damaged due to this. There are also reports of some vehicles being washed away.” The army is running a search operation to find the missing soldiers and civilians.

While tweeting about this flood, the Prime Minister wrote that he talked to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and got information about the matter. In the tweet, the Prime Minister has assured the Chief Minister of the state of all possible help. The Chief Minister of the state himself reached on ground and saw the damage caused by the flood.
