Ground Report | New Delhi: Shahdara gang rape case; A 20-year-old woman was kidnapped,gang-raped, shaved and sexually assaulted by a group of people in the Shahdara district of Delhi. A video that went viral on social media in which the victim was seen assaulted and humiliated on the streets of Kasturba Nagar. The victim's face was blackened and a garland of slippers was circled around her neck, and the actions were cheered and applauded by the spectators.
The family of the victim alleged that nobody from their locality called the police, and it was only after an hour the female sibling managed to get a phone from a neighbour and called the cops. The incident took place on Wednesday, January 26. It is to be said the heinous crime was set up by her neighbours over a case of personal rivalry after a teenage boy belonging to their family had committed suicide after being rejected by her.
National Commission for Women (NCW)on seeing the video took cognisance of the matter and issued a notice regarding the immediate arrest of men and women involved in the gang rape. NCW chief Rekha Sharma wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking the arrest of the accused and providing security to the victim.
The Commission stated the incident highly condemnable in strongest possible words. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday called it a shameful act and urged the Centre to instruct the police to take strict action.
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against 11 people under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections in reference to physical and sexual assault, illegal confinement, abduction and gang rape. Nine of the arrested accused in this case are women and two under-aged boys.
DCP R Sathiyasundaram stated that the victim was forced to put a private part of the men in her mouth of action to defame her and the men did this shameful act to her in front of their mother, aunt and other women in the family.
While speaking about the Shahdara gang rape case, a woman from the locality informed that the family of the accused hold a lot of influence in the area. Everyone fears them as they run the business of selling liquor and drugs. Days after the Shahadra case, rumours are seen doing rounds on social media platforms.
On January 31, 2022, the Delhi Police Commissioner Sathiyasundaram released a statement that some people are trying to give a communal angle to the incident and are sharing the name of the victim which is restricted under the law were completely false. The case has been registered against Twitter handles and youtube channels for spreading rumours.
He further added, the victim was safe and is under security. However strict actions are to be taken against the person spreading more rumours and misinformation.
