Ground Report | New Delhi: Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada joined the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP. Prasad joined the party during a brief program at the BJP's central office in the national capital. This has dealt a big blow to Congress in the 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Jitin Prasad is considered very close to the Gandhi family and has been a Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh twice. He has been considered the main face of Uttar Pradesh Congress. His father Jitendra Prasad has been a senior Congress leader.

It is believed that Jitin Prasad was angry with the party's high command for the past several days. He was among 23 senior leaders who wrote to the Congress High Command and talked about major changes in the party. Jitin Prasada's quitting with Congress can be seen as a setback for the party in view of the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Prasad, who was a minister in the Manmohan Singh government, had joined the Congress in the year 2001 and reached Parliament for the first time in 2004. In the midst of all this, the name of Congress leader Pramod Tiwari from UP is also in the discussion that he can join the BJP. Prasada was among the 'G23' leaders who have demanded an overhaul of the Congress following the drubbing in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In 2004, he won his first Lok Sabha election from his hometown Shahjahanpur. In his first term, he was inducted as the Minister of State for Steel and was the youngest minister in the cabinet. In 2009, he contested and won from Dhaurahra.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP from Uttarakhand and National Media Chief of BJP, Anil Baluni had expressed its views by tweeting this morning itself. Although Baluni did not write anyone's name in the tweet. He wrote, "A big personality will join BJP at 1 pm today at BJP Headquarters (New Delhi) at 6A DDU Marg."

The joining of Jitin Prasad, one of the senior Congress leaders in UP, can be important in terms of elections to be held in the state next year. Even though the name has not been disclosed yet, but due to the elections in UP next year, speculations are in full swing about Jitin Prasada. Jitin Prasad has been an MP from Dhaurahara Lok Sabha seat. Apart from this, he had the responsibility of Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the UP government.
