A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific. The quake, one of the strongest in the region since 1952, was shallow, just 19.3 km deep, and struck about 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk. The US Geological Survey initially reported it as an 8.0 before revising it upward.

Tsunami waves followed the quake. Japan’s Meteorological Agency confirmed a 30 cm wave hit Nemuro on Hokkaido’s eastern coast. Russia reported similar waves reaching Severo-Kurilsk, the main town on the Kuril Islands. Japanese authorities warned that waves up to three meters could strike coastal regions between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. local time. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued advisories for Alaska and watches for Guam and parts of Micronesia. Indonesia and the Philippines also issued warnings.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said no injuries had been reported so far, but a kindergarten building suffered damage. Seismic centers and emergency services are closely monitoring the situation, and people in coastal areas were moved to higher ground. Officials expect strong aftershocks, possibly up to magnitude 7.5.

Footage from the region shows buildings shaking violently, with alarms sounding in seismic monitoring stations. Inside homes, furniture shifted, and people scrambled for safety. While there are no confirmed casualties, the scale of the quake and ongoing tsunami risk have put multiple regions on high alert.
