Cyclonic storm Fengal will impact Madhya Pradesh today, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a rain alert for seven districts. Betul, Dindori, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, and Pandhurna are expected light rain and cloudy skies in the next 24 hours. Wind speeds in these regions have risen by 3-4 km/h.
Severe cold wave expected
A severe cold wave is forecast for the coming weeks, especially affecting Morena, Gwalior, Sheopur, Shivpuri, Bhind, and Datia. Minimum temperatures may drop to 2–3°C due to icy winds from Kashmir. Dense fog and below-normal day and night temperatures will intensify the winter chill.
December rainfall is projected to stay below normal, with only a 33% chance of precipitation. However, western disturbances could bring isolated rain and fog. January may see additional rainfall between the 1st and 15th, with persistent fog.
Bhopal has been experiencing sharply below-normal temperatures. On Sunday, the city recorded a maximum of 25.2°C (three degrees below normal) and a minimum of 8.6°C (five degrees below normal). Shajapur had a lower minimum of 6.1°C. Monday's forecast for Bhopal predicts a clear sky with haze, temperatures ranging between 24°C (daytime) and 9°C (nighttime), and an average wind speed of 12 kmph.
Warnings and weather outlook
A cold wave warning has been issued for Rajgarh and Shajapur districts. Despite the cyclone's effects, dry weather is expected over most of the state. Cyclone Fengal was last recorded over latitude 12.0°N and longitude 79.8°E near Puducherry, while a western disturbance persists as a trough in the middle troposphere near longitude 62°E.
Residents should prepare for intensified cold conditions, with the peak cold wave likely between late December and early January.
