In a major tragedy 36 people were killed and 19 injured after a passenger plunged around 200 meters down a steep downhill, near the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Quoting Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh, Jitendra Singh, Union minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office, wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Saddened to share the update from DC #Doda Sh Harvinder Singh from the spot of the accident. Unfortunately 36 persons have died and 19 injured, out of whom 6 injured are serious”.

According to the Ground Report, the Union minister said the injured are being shifted to the government medical colleges in Doda and Jammu and all possible help is being provided. “Sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” he added.

Several Jammu and Kashmir political leaders including former chief ministers expressed shock and condolences over the loss of lives in the tragic incident.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti too condoled the loss of lives. Taking to X, Mufti wrote, “Deeply shocked & saddened about the tragic road accident at Assar in Doda. Deepest condolences to the families of those feared dead & hope the administration expedites rescue operations."

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences on the tragic loss.

"I am deeply saddened by the news of the unfortunate death of several passengers in a bus accident in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. I express my condolences to the bereaved family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," Murmu said in a post in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter).

The Prime Minister's office said, "The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing. My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest." It added that those injured will receive an assistance of ₹ 50,000

Quoting news wire KNO the bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the Assar area today morning.

According to a press release issued by the J&K government, Lieutenant Governor J&K Manoj Sinha also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families & wishing for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident. Directed Div Com & Dist Admin to provide all necessary assistance to affected persons,” the Lt Governor tweeted.
