Ground Report | New Delhi: Crime rate in Uttar Pradesh; Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath claims that the state has experienced a downfall in the crime rates. To prevent the evil widespread of crimes in the state, Yogi Adityanath has tightened the iron grip around the criminal’s neck which further led to the reduction of crime in the U.P.

On March 19, 2017, after taking the pledge as the 21st CM of UP, Yogi Adityanath worked as described in his manifesto with priority to free the state from Gundaraj, murder, kidnapping, loot, riots, and other crimes. He warned that there is no place for criminals in the U.P and stated that criminals will have to face severe consequences. 

The Yogi Government stood by their words and did not let any discrimination happen. He treated everybody at an equal level and did not let the social status of the guilty influence the final decision, Whether it be the case of  Vikas Dubey in Kanpur or Ikram from Shamli, or Kuldeep Sengar, a member of his party, The verdict was given according to the crime they committed and they had to face severe consequences. 

Crime rate in Uttar Pradesh

The opposition party is targeting that, the BJP government is not presenting accurate data. But if we see the record of NCRB  (National Crime Records Bureau), According to the NCRB’s 2020 report, U.P. has not depicted any major changes but it is to be noted that the crime rates did sharply decrease under the Yogi Government. Moreover, since Digitalization, corruption has also decreased.

The Crime Index below depicts the cases of Rapes, Kidnapping, Riots and Murder that happened during the time of Akhilesh Yadav’s Government as well as Yogi Adityanath’s Government.

UP stands, 36th in acid attack cases in the country. There is a decline of 11.6%, in the cases registered under the protection of children for sexual offences.

Uttar Pradesh government has taken numerous steps to check the crime against women which includes anti-Romeo squad, UP-122 India app, night security cover scheme, women help desk, pink booths, etc. With "Mission Shakti" started in October 2020. Police teams with the help of self-help groups are spreading awareness among the women about their rights and encouraging them to raise their voices against and report the crime to the police. .

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been working constantly to ensure security, safety authorization for the Welfare of women as well as working to decrease the crime rates have been one of the top priorities of the government.  Furthermore, they are also taking strict actions against the illegal cow slaughterhouse. 

Speaking to the Indian Express, ADG ( law and order) Prashant Kumar said, As visible in the NCRB data, There has been an improvement in the overall law and order situation in the state. He attributed this improvement to an environment created by the government where there is no outside interference in day-to-day polishing. The chief minister has resolved to ensure zero tolerance for crime and criminals. Police officers can work freely without the interference of outsiders. Special attention is being directed to the women security Fast-tracking of action in heinous crime and Mafia.

Effects of Pandemic on Crime

There is a slight rise in crime at the time of pandemic due to elevated restrictions done by the government whether it is loot, assault, kidnapping, dacoity, etc. According to the NCRB report, There is an increase of cybercrime showing an increase of 11.8 % registration over 2019. The crime rate under this category increased from 3.3% in 2019 to 3.7% in 2020.
