Indian-origin man shot dead while sitting in parked vehicle in New York

A 31-year-old Indian man was shot to death while sitting in an SUV parked across the street from his home in New York, according to media reports, days after an Indian national was killed after sustaining an apparent gunshot wound to his head in Maryland.

Satnam Singh was found sitting in the car at around 3:46 p.m. Saturday in the South Ozone Park section of Queens with gunshot wounds to the neck and torso, the New York Post reported, citing the New York Police Department.

Medics took Singh, beaten in the chest and neck, to Jamaica Hospital, where he died a short time later, police said. He lived just down the street from where he was shot.

Although police said the gunman approached Singh on foot, neighbours said the shots came from a silver sedan with a black trunk that was driving past the Jeep.

“[Singh] was walking down 129th Street going to the car and the other car showed up with the perpetrator,” said neighbour Joan Cappellani. The shooting was caught on security cameras at his home, which is being reviewed by NYPD officers, she said.

“It was just another crazy day at South Ozone Park,” she said.

Singh had borrowed a friend’s Jeep a short time before, a police source said. Police said that needed the Jeep to pick someone up.

On Sunday, detectives were trying to determine if the gunman was aiming at Singh or hoping to kill the owner of the truck and did not know who was inside.

No arrests have been made.

“He was very kind and calm,” said neighbour Christina Persaud. “I said ‘Hello’ to him every day when I saw him. Maybe it was a target, but I don’t know.”
