Government enterprises dealing with coal and lignite have achieved a reduction in carbon emissions equivalent to 1.17 lakh tonnes of CO2 by implementing energy efficiency measures. This was revealed during a review of these measures on January 19, 2024.
The review meeting, presided over by the Coal Secretary, disclosed that from the fiscal year 2021-22 to December 2023, these enterprises replaced 4.24 lakh traditional lights with LED lights. They also installed energy-efficient appliances including 5357 air conditioners, 83236 super fans, 201 electric vehicles, 1583 water heaters, 444 pump motors, 2712 auto-timers, and capacitor banks for street lights.
Efficiency measures saved energy, reduced emissions
These energy efficiency measures resulted in total energy savings of 14.34 crore kWh and financial savings of Rs 107.6 crore. Importantly, these initiatives contributed significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions by 1.17 lakh tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Coal India Limited has entered into an MOU with Energy Efficiency Services Limited to implement comprehensive Energy Efficiency Programs at CIL and its subsidiaries. This initiative encompasses Building Energy Efficiency Projects (BEEP), the replacement of outdated fans, air conditioners, and conventional light fittings, motors, the adoption of electric vehicles, and the installation of distributed and rooftop solar projects.
The press release further stated that coal and lignite public sector units (PSUs) have replaced all conventional lights with energy-efficient LED lights in their operational areas, offices, mines, warehouses, residential colonies, and even toilets.
Over the past three years, these PSUs have undertaken various energy conservation and efficiency measures such as energy audits, transition to LED lights, use of star-rated appliances, installation of capacitor banks and auto-timers in street lights, deployment of energy-efficient pumps and electric vehicles, and water conservation. These energy management initiatives have led to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with global environmental sustainability goals.
Coal Secretary praises energy efficiency
The Secretary of Coal reviewed the Energy Efficiency Measures undertaken by Coal/Lignite PSUs on 19.01.2024 and appreciated the remarkable works carried out in the Coal Sector on this initiative. During the meeting, the Secretary of Coal recommended exploring the use of EVs in transportation and mining operations in consult with DGMS, implementing building energy efficiency measures in all the buildings of Coal/Lignite PSUs progressively, and using LNG vehicles in mining operations.
Coal/Lignite PSUs reaffirm dedication to reducing their carbon footprint and embracing innovative solutions to enhance energy efficiency across their operations while meeting the nation's energy demands through various initiatives towards energy conservation.
Coal/Lignite PSUs commit to this initiative, which aligns with the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration. The G20 and CoP-28 made a voluntary commitment in it to double the Rate of Energy Efficiency Improvement by 2030.
