Ongoing heat waves and stormy rains are affecting various parts of the country. While stormy rains ease the heat in some areas, there are concerns about potential major losses.

The Meteorological Department is forecasting favourable conditions for further advance of the southwest monsoon towards the southern Indian peninsula and some parts of eastern India and adjacent areas from June 18 to 21.

The temperature is expected to drop by five to six degrees Celsius in Gujarat over the next five days, and a drop of two to four degrees Celsius is forecast in northwestern India. Apart from these regions and Uttar Pradesh, there will be no significant changes in the maximum temperature in most of the country in the next five days.

Severe heat waves are expected today in Odisha, West Bengal, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and isolated parts of Telangana. The Department of Meteorology indicates that heat wave conditions will persist in these areas for the next four to five days.

Warm nights are expected in East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh on June 14-15. Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema are likely to experience hot and humid weather for the next three days.

Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast for today in different parts of Saurashtra, Kutch, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayas West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and isolated parts of Gujarat.

Strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning are forecast in several regions, including Rajasthan, the Ganges coast of West Bengal, the inland north of Karnataka, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand, Kerala and Mahe, the Karnataka coast, Rayalaseema, the coast of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and more.

Hurricane-force winds of 125 to 135 kmph, gusting up to 150 kmph, are expected over the north-eastern Arabian Sea, Saurashtra and Kutch coasts.

Yesterday, severe heatwave conditions were observed off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Bihar, parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. The rain and thunderstorms occurred in isolated parts of different states.
