Dengue outbreak hits these states in India

A survey by LocalCircles revealed that 25% of Indian households have been affected by dengue and other vector-borne diseases in the past three years. These diseases have seen a significant surge in various states in recent weeks.

More than 20 states have reported between 1,000 and 10,000 dengue cases, while 15 states have reported less than 1,000 cases this year. As of September 17, the National Center for Vector-Borne Disease Control reported 94,198 cases of dengue in the country.

West Bengal recorded the highest number of cases in October with 8,535 cases in North 24 Parganas district and 4,427 in Kolkata. Tamil Nadu has been reporting fifty new cases of dengue every day for the past two weeks, bringing the total number of cases this year to 5,356. Bihar reported 373 dengue cases on Wednesday alone, bringing the total number of cases in October to 4,940.

Uttar Pradesh has reported over 13,000 dengue cases so far, with 600 new cases registered on October 20, 2023. Major hotspots include Lucknow, Moradabad, Meerut, Kanpur and Noida.

The survey received 58,000 responses from 327 districts. Of these respondents, 47% were from Tier 1 cities, 34% from Tier 2 cities, and 19% from Tier 3 and rural districts.

Despite the surge in mosquito-borne diseases, about 73% of survey participants said that their areas had not been fumigated by the municipal corporation or local administration in the past 45 days. This lack of action by authorities increases household expenses incurred by families to control mosquitoes.

According to the survey, 43% of families spend Rs.200 or more every month on mosquito control. Most people rely on liquid repellents, sprays or battery-powered rackets.
