Comedian sparks Controversy over Prostitution remarks

The video is a short part from one of her YouTube videos titled ‘Prostitution.’ In the video, she can be seen making fun of prostitution. Many people slammed her for what they perceived as an ‘insensitive’ approach. Some comments criticized her for glorifying prostitution.

Vidushi Swaroop issued a clarification stating that someone had taken the video from a full YouTube video and it does not reflect the actual perspective of the clip. Despite her clarification, many continue to express their disapproval of her comments, keeping the debate going.

Who is standup comedian Vidushi Swaroop?

Vidushi Swaroop, a stand-up comedian based in India, has been making waves in the comedy scene. She has been performing full-time as a stand-up comedian since February 2018. Known for her unique style and perspective, Vidushi often touches on social issues in her performances.

In addition to her comedy career, Vidushi is also a Graduate Engineer Trainee at Ericsson, a role she has held since February 2020. Prior to this, she was part of the marketing team at TechSamvaad Pvt. Ltd. and Howdybuddy. She also interned at Culture Machine Media Pvt. Ltd., where she worked with the social content team of Being Indian and Blush.

Vidushi holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from Manipal University Jaipur. Despite her technical background, she describes herself as a “Full Time Comedian and Part Time Engineer”.

Many netizens have taken offence to the joke. One netizen has stated, "Saying that Prostitution is a cool profession is the ignorant thing ever. Ask the women who work and go through these things. If you are laughing and encouraging her for her idiotic stuff, please start using your brain.

Someone else shared the same sentiment, 'Regrettably, some self-proclaimed stand-up comedians find amusement in commenting on religion or other sensitive topics. They often convince themselves that they're funny and the audience, who believe the acts to be cool, just laugh along.'"

A netizen who go by the name Smiti wrote, “Feeling sorry for the parent. Who didn’t have time for their kids. Tabhi toh itne bakwaas ban gaye. Bolne wale aur sunnke hasne wale dono bekar hai.”

One user Bishvendra Singh wrote on X saying, “This is the level of Indian standup comedians. Small small g!rls gets kidn@pped, traumatized, are forced & thrown into this. And she is cracking such jokes on them. This is even below than anything below disgusting.”
