A fight broke out at several locations on Thursday between police and followers of self-proclaimed religious leader Amritpal Singh, chairman of the Waris Punjab Dae, at Ajnala in Amritsar, Punjab.
Police made the decision after thousands of group supporters broke through barricades with guns and swords at an Amritsar police station and threatened to disrupt law and order.
Based on the evidence before us, Lovepreet Toofan Singh will be discharged. SIT set up to investigate the case, SSP Amritsar Singh said.
“The FIR registered only for a political reason. If they don't cancel the case within an hour, the administration will be responsible for what happens next… They think we can't do anything, so this show of force was necessary," Amritpal Singh told reporters.
Stepping up his demand to release Lovepreet Toofan within 24 hours, Amritpal said: "They spread false news that police personnel were injured. The truth is that he was injured after he fell. In fact, 10-12 of our people were injured. Within 24 hours, Tufan Singh must be released."
Waris Punjab de group
Waris Punjab De is a cultural and social organization that promotes Punjabi language, literature, and culture. The group was founded by Punjabi actor and activist, the late Deep Sidhu. The organization aims to preserve and promote the Punjabi language, literature, and culture through various activities such as poetry recitations, cultural events, and literary discussions.
The group also works towards addressing social issues such as drug abuse, female infanticide, and environmental degradation. In addition, Waris Punjab De has been involved in advocating for the rights of Punjabi farmers and has participated in various protests against the recent farm laws introduced by the Indian government.
Who Is Amritpal Singh?
Amritpal Singh is the head of 'Waris Punjab De', a team founded by actor and activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident in February last year. Amritpal Singh became the head of the group after Sidhu's death. Deep Sidhu came into the spotlight last year when he was arrested for violence during farmers' Republic Day protests.
Amritpal Singh, a self-described preacher who claims to represent the Sikh community, was born in Jallupur Khera of Punjab. He recently married UK-based NRI Kirandeep Kaur.
He claims to be a spiritual leader and his fiery oratory skills and promise to free youth from the clutches of the drug menace have won him a following in Punjab and other parts of India.
Amritpal calls slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale his "inspiration". He even dresses up as the slain militant and copies his gestures, said a report in The Indian Express.
Armed supporters often escort Amritpal. The self-described Sikh preacher recently sparked a political row in Punjab with controversial comments against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh reportedly said that the "fate of HM Shah will be similar to that of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, " assassinated by her security guards in 1984.
