Ground Report | New Delhi: Caste Dynamics in Uttar Pradesh; Casteism is an unfortunate part of our society especially in India, caste is a defining structure of a person's social status and identity. When it comes to caste, it can be found in many religions but it is most prominently known in either Hinduism or Islam.
Today, India has come a long way from where it stood earlier with a few steps that were taken by our leaders, famously by Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar. Although, there are rules of law that don't hide the fact that the practice of casteism is still prevalent in India and Uttar Pradesh is no exception to it.
Earlier casteism was visible through nomenclature that was specifically used to degrade or call upon the lower caste. The use of a vocabulary that was the result of this social apartheid is still seen today in most rural parts of the country. Some villages still follow the practices adhered by their ancestors, degrading for some and a symbol of pride for others.
The politicization of Caste in Uttar Pradesh:
Casteism is a norm in Uttar Pradesh, a social living structure that sets one group different than the other in terms of status. This ability to differentiate a group to define a social hierarchy is used by political parties to manipulate their vote banks. As UP elections are approaching politicization of caste has begun to take its route, many political parties have begun approaching people on the matter of caste rather than addressing actual problems faced by civilians.
Education, Healthcare, Electricity, Water is no more the topic of discussion, rather addressing people of the cast by guilty them into being greedy and placing their caste on a superior pedestal by giving them a priority is just one of the few things of caste dynamics.
How the Politicization of Caste Plays Role in Manipulating Votes:
Samajwadi Party, AIMIM, and Bhartiya Janta Party are all keen to show interest in smaller parties, the reason being those parties represent a specific caste. For instance, the pioneer stated that BJP is focusing on Kashyap's, Kurmi, Apna Dal to support a specific section of the caste.
AIMIM is all talking about building mosques in Barabanki and Samajwadi Party is seeking support from Kushwahas, Mauryas, Pals, Dhangars, and many others. The entire focus of the election has shifted from the needs of the civilians to following the feeling the superiority. The entire politics in UP either revolves around religion or caste as political parties play puppets with the sentiments of society while favouring the social apartheid instead of abolishing one.
A lot of focus in Uttar Pradesh is being made on the brahmins as they constitute 10% or 104 assembly seats out of four hundred as per the pioneer. This enacts as a major role in determining the politicization as slogans are made to either degrade or dignify the known castes via political parties as by doing so they successfully get what they want, for instance, BJP by doing so got 82% of brahmins votes in 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 80% votes in assembly elections.
Conclusion:
These aren't just figures but factual visual that states how politics in the name of caste manipulate voters into buying the nonsense of caste superiority and diverts their attention from the actual problems and issues which unfortunately the political parties are not qualified enough to either understand or to provide solutions for the same.
