Ground Report | New Delhi: Cannabis in Assam; Assam police have destroyed 15 cannabis-growing bighas in Assam's Goalpara district, marking a significant victory in the war on drugs. After receiving information, the illicit crops in Latibari char, Bamunialga char and Patakata char in Goalpara district were destroyed.

Informing about the development, Assam chief minister Himant Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Another major success achieved in @assampolice’s drive against drugs. About 15 bighas of cannabis cultivation has been destroyed at Latibari char, Bamunialga char & Patakata char under Chunari PS, Goalpara dist. Much appreciated. Keep it up.”

Assam Police has seized 19 kg drugs, 14 kg opium, 1,920 kg morphine, 33,014 poppy straw, 8,276 kg ganja, 67,650 bottles of cough syrup, 12,93,000 high stimulant pills, Rs 1 crore cash, foreign currency equivalent to Rs 13,630 destroyed a cannabis plantation in 31 bighas of land, according to Sarma, who also holds the Home Department. Drugs were burnt in public functions in Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Hojai, and Nagaon districts.
According to an Assam Police release, 18.82 kg of drugs, 7944.72 kg of cannabis, 67,371 bottles of cough syrup, 12,70,394 over-the-counter sedative pills, 1.93 kg of morphine, 3 kg of methamphetamine and 3,313 kg of opium have been seized in the past few months.
Drugs coming from Myanmar are known to enter through Karbi Anglong, where Diphu is located, and Golaghat, the neighboring state of Nagaland.

The Chief Minister shared visuals of setting fire to the drugs and added that 11.88 kg morphine, 2.89 kg crystal meth, 3.47 kg drugs, 102.91 kg Cannabis and 2,03,384 tablets were destroyed at Diphu. "Today in Golaghat, we destroyed 802 gm drugs worth more than ₹ 20 cr, 1205 kg Ganja/Cannabis, 3kg Opium & 2,06,906 nos tablets," he said in another tweet.
How Assam police destroyed it?
The Assam Police destroyed 1,000 kg of confiscated cannabis by burning it at the incineration facility of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH). Over 1,000 kg of cannabis was seized in the last few days. The Sonitpur police had earlier increased their vigil and made several busts to seize Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS).
Earlier on November 16, Sonitpur police conducted a search operation at the residence of a person named Mojibur Rahman and recovered 125 suspected Ganja Puris.
