The Atlanta Police Department is investigating an active shooter situation in the Midtown neighbourhood of Atlanta. Several people have reportedly been injured.
The police department took to Twitter to confirm that the incident occurred in a building located on West Peachtree Street between 12th and 13th Streets. The location is a strip mall that is home to many high-rise apartment and office buildings.
“We are working an active shooter situation inside a building on West Peachtree St,” the PD said in a Facebook post. “We are aware of multiple people injured. No suspect is in custody. Anyone in the area is asked to secure their building and continue to shelter in place. Anyone not in the area is asked to stay away.”
The suspect has not yet been apprehended and authorities have described the situation as “active” and “fluid.” This incident is yet another example of the gun violence and mass shootings that have been plaguing cities across the United States in 2023.
According to police reports, the suspect believed to be responsible for the shooting was captured in a photograph, wearing dark pants and a light-colored hoodie with the hood pulled up, along with a face mask and a bag across the front.
Authorities warned that the individual is considered to be armed and dangerous, and urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact 911 immediately. To ensure safety, people in the immediate vicinity are encouraged to secure their buildings and remain sheltered in place.
R. J. Stanionis, a senior police officer, confirmed to The Daily Beast that the incident occurred at Northside Hospital Medical Midtown. Police shared four surveillance images of the suspect, showing him wearing a gray hoodie, gloves and a bag, as he holds a firearm in the driveway.
