Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the families of those who died by tweeting.

The PM has tweeted – “The accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh is heart-wrenching. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this. Along with this, I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The local administration is engaged in all possible help.”

Kashi Nagar Superintendent of Police Chandra Patel said he was informed of the incident in the evening. The women were gathering near the well for a ceremony when suddenly the slab on it broke and the victims fell inside. Hearing the screams, the locals fled and evacuated the victims. Thirteen have died while three others are undergoing treatment, Patel added. The victims are relatives and neighbors of the family who arranged the marriage.

Taking serious note of the matter, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the Kashi Nagar district administration to provide all possible assistance to the victims.

“The death of the villagers in an unfortunate incident of village Naurangiya School Tola of Kushinagar district is extremely sad. My condolences are with the bereaved families of the deceased."

News agency ANI quoted Kushinagar District Magistrate S Rajalingam as saying, “There was an old well in Naurangiya Tola village which was covered with slap. Children and women were sitting on top of it during worship, during which the slap went down and debris fell on them.

Quoting S Rajalingam, news agency ANI has written that financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the kin of each of the deceased.
