BJP leader, Pramod Yadav was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district. Pramod Yadav, who resided in the Bodhapur village located in Sikrara police station area, encountered a brutal attack in broad daylight by motorcycle-borne assailants who had come to meet him under the pretext of delivering a wedding invite.
According to police, the assailants stopped Pramod Yadav, 55, on the pretext of giving a ‘card’ and shot him three times. The assailants fled the scene leaving their bike at some distance.
Jaunpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajaipal Sharma said that they have deployed several teams to ensure the arrest of the assailants and the initial investigation has provided some important clues.
"The locals created chaos in the area, causing the accused persons to flee the spot and leave their bike behind. The police have since recovered the bike from the spot. Meanwhile, they immediately took the victim to the hospital, where he died during treatment."
Who was BJP leader Pramod Yadav
Pramod Yadav, a BJP leader, ran for office in the 2012 assembly elections representing the Malhani constituency of Jaunpur. He was up against Jagriti Singh, the former spouse of ex-BSP MP Dhananjay Singh. However, both were defeated by an SP candidate.
Dhananjay Singh, currently affiliated with the JD(U), had intentions to run in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Jaunpur and had announced on social media. However, on 6th March, he received a 7-year sentence for a 2020 kidnapping case involving a UP Jal Nigam senior official, as decided by the Jaunpur MP/MLA court.
The verdict disqualifies him from election candidacy under the Representation of the People Act. Singh is reportedly considering an appeal in the High Court. If he is barred from running, it’s speculated that his wife, Shrikala Reddy, the District Panchayat President of Jaunpur, might take his place as a candidate.
Pramod Yadav’s father, Rajbali Yadav, who was linked to the Jana Sangh, was also murdered in 1980. Rajbali had previously contested elections from the Rari constituency on a Jana Sangh ticket but was unsuccessful.
